Review our Frequently Asked Questions about Ultrasonic Sensors

What are the most common applications for ultrasonic sensors?

These sensors are used in applications where a non-contact sensor is required or desired.

  • Distance Ranging
  • Level Measurement
  • Presence/Proximity Detection
  • Industrial Production Lines
  • Robotics
  • Heavy Equipment
  • Kiosk
  • Automotive

What sizes can ultrasonic sensors be manufactured for?

SensComp offers ultrasonic sensors (transducers) that range is size from 8.2 mm dia. to 38.4 mm dia. Each of these have their own operating specifications that can be found on the SensComp website products page.

Do ultrasonic sensors work the same in warm and cold weather?

Ultrasonic sensors operate by emitting a burst of sound energy (waves) and then receive the returning echoes back from the sound waves bouncing off a target. The time that it takes for the echo to leave the sensor and return can be measured  This measured time is then mathematically converted to a distance. The physics of sound traveling through open air is affected by the temperature of the air. Heat, like sound, is a form of kinetic energy. Molecules at higher temperatures have more energy and can vibrate faster and allow sound waves to travel more quickly. However, in cold air, it is the opposite, and sound travels slower. The speed of sound at room temperature air is 346 meters per second.

Can an ultrasonic sensor be used for maritime applications?

Ultrasonic sensors can be used in maritime application if the sensor itself is designed for use in that environment. Some ultrasonic transducers are hermetically sealed or made of materials that can withstand moist, humid conditions. Some are designed that they can be splashed with water, and some are designed specifically for use immersed in water. SensComp does not offer any ultrasonic sensor (transducers) for immersible applications. All of SensComp sensors are for open air applications.

Does the Military use ultrasonic sensors on equipment?

Yes, the military does use ultrasonic sensors. These could be used on vehicles, drones or other applications.

Do most security systems integrate an ultrasonic sensor within the build?

Some security system can use an ultrasonic sensor, this depends on the individual manufacturer and its applications.

What is the shortest and longest range an ultrasonic sensor can work within?

Each ultrasonic sensor is designed for different specifications. There are sensors that can detect as low as 1 inch and some out to 35 feet. The width of detection is also model specific. Each sensor’s specifications will give the range for that unit.
